Well if you're asking why did they create the character, I dunno.

But in the pilot, she was a solicitor, which is a fancy name for a prostitute.  

The surviving fleet who were short on space didn't think much of having a prostitute on board and appeared ready to throw her out the airlock.  She defended her profession by saying that it was an honorable profession, and had it's approval from the Lords of Kobol (or was it the Quorum) way back when.  Of course they were all/mostly men, so of course they wouldn't frown on it.

The ABC execs cried foul.  This is a family show.  So she became a med tech.

The interesting thing is Cain.  During "The Living Legend" he says that he and Cassi were involved back before the cylon attack.

Which I think is odd.  A Commander dating a prostitute.  I guess when they went on dates, he didn't ask her how her workday went.

I wasn't asking why they created cassie.......I remember they had origins.  Like Caprica, sagitaria(is that right?) I meant did we ever know where?  Oh and yeah maybe Cain was one of her "customers" when they met and perhaps he wasn't a commander yet

I was thinking she said she was Gemonese. As for being a prostitute, I was thinking that she was more of a like a vestal woman (not vestal virgin) as in the old days.

When we see Cassi for the first time on one of the other ships, a couple is spounting some foreign language.  Starbuck says that it is Gemonese and says that Boomer (who isn't with them) can translate.  Cassi translates.  Woman calls her a dirty socilator.   Cassi later says that she is  Gemonese as well.

Later, Starbuck asks her name.  She says Cassiopeia.  He says it means "Fairy Queen".  He asks her designation.  She says Solicator.  That it is is an honorable profession, practiced with the blessing of the elders for over 4,000 years.

It's not specifically stated in the pilot, but since Cassi speaks Gemonese,  and lifted off planet with other Gemonese, I think we can assume that she probably is Gemonese.  Unless it's said somewhere else on the other episodes.

As for Cain possibly not being a Commander at the time, that is certainly possible.  It's also possible that she wasn't a solicitor when they were together, though you'd think that if he was missing her so much, they were an item up until the cylon attack.

Thanks for the info!  I thought she was Gemonese but I knew someone would know for sure!

I never thought it was a prob for Cain to have had a relationship with Cassie. I always thought of Cassie as a Geisha instead of a prostitute.  A sort of high class escort who was smart, beautiful and socially adept.

That he kept company with her after Sheba's mother, would be a source of disapproval to his children (after all Sheba was trying hard to hate Cassie..) but not necessarily to society as a whole.

I think it was a great character, but obviously one the US networks weren't ready for in 1979!!

Cassie was probably Gemonese, altho we only knew she spoke it (translating for the old couple) and the Otari sect members disapproved of her designation. Wasn't there a line about her father having a freighter?

In the ep with the prison planet, (which showed on cable here last week) the transmissions that Robber makes when he steals the CORA equipped Viper from Starbuck are identified by Cassie as 'Arien freighter codes" and her explaination to the confused bridge crew is her father was a Arien frighter captain/pilot (not exact wording) and she used to do the codes/transmissions for him
So, whether her mother is Gemonese, is not stated, but her father appears to be Arien, and she spent some time with him on freighter runs.. but whether he was a entirely legal transport contractor or had a touch of the Han Solo's about him leads to another rich source of speculation.:lol:  :lol:

I always thought of her as more in the Heitiera class of "professional escort", such as one found in ancient Athens. They weren't just a streetwalker looking for a horny john. They were all-around entertainers, skilled in numerous crafts, and not just sex.
Cassie must have done well at it. The dress she was wearing when SB found her didn't look like something she got off the rack at the Salvation Army store.

I'll take a wild guess on that and say it was because they turned her from a socialator to a med tech for the TV series.  :wink:
