The local theatre group I belong to (and recently stepped dopwn as a board member) is starting a new project called studio j productions.  Studio J is going to be an avenue for creative expression.  The person who runs studio J is a huge sci fi fan.  The rules are these...

The play should be no more than 2 acts.  It cannot violate copyright (must be an original creation).  You must allow us to perform it for free (you will get full credit as the play wright-you will also retain all rights to your creation...we just wanna run it for free for one weekend).  The cast should be small (9 people or less).

What do you get out of it?  Your play will be seen on a stage near chicago in an auditorium that seats 200 people for three nights.  There will be press releases and reviews of your play.

If you have something..PM me.  If you want to spread the word, please do so.  Serious inquiries and submission only please.  If the play is good and can be produced on a small budget, I promise you, it will see stage time.

Wow perfect for a little piece I did as a character backround story. It took place inside a bunker during and just after the Cylon attack. Of course it could take place anywhere during any "invasion", but it centered around the loss of prejudice, biggotry, and ignorance of seven people that are in the shelter. They come from different life styles and learned that all they ever thought they "knew" was rubbish, and that it was so very very pointless to spend lives locked in hate, ignorance, and biggotry, when they people they believed to be so contemptable might be the last ones they ever know. Interested?

wraith, feel free to remove references to bsg and send me a pdf.  If you like, I will even sign off on an nda protecting your intellectual property...or you can just add "copyright me, 2006" on it.  It sounds intriguing and since I know a little about you, at least one of the lifestyles you speak of will be right in line with some of the messages we want studio j to be.  This is not about seeing a nice and pretty play and walking away with pop corn entertainment.  This is about challenging audiences in regard to how they see the world.  Your story sounds wonderful, I would love to read it. I know you are a a college kid, if you do not mind flying cheap, I would even be willing to pay for your air fare to get you to see the show the week end it shows so you can see your creation.  All of our shows are professionally videotaped and put on dvd as well so you would have something to be your calling card too..

Ok, give me a few weeks to get the BSG references sorted out, I would not want to upset anyone in the Larsen camp.
Your right about the material in it, but its far more than that, its also a bit challenging because it contains references that, at the time, were purely just topics in my head, but later Abu Grabe and now the charges of Marines killing civilians, well, its become topical by accident. So I promise I will definately get it to ya, and Im SO not worried about the credit going to me or anyone, I live by the saying, "Its amazing what can get done when people stop worrying about who gets credit."
We can talk about the hotel and air fare, heck never know I might just show up unannounced, just to see how it is going with noone knowing I even was there. Thats they kinda girl I am.

Does anyone know where I can get a PDF editor/creater for free? I dont have one and that makes it harder to do something like this. Since Ive never tried writing a play, let me know if what Ive got is too wordy, too short, too long... basically give me an idea of its on the right track or not. Thanks!

If you download OPen Office ( http://openoffice.org ) you will get a fully featured office suite .  You can write your play as a doc and export it to a pdf.  There are other tools out there, but I like free.
