This is tragic and I feel for his two kids  He died doing what he loved though..........not all of us can say that. It is weird because sting rays are supposed to be docile.

From what I undestand, teh thing was buried in the sand and Stee startled it. Normally the sting isn't enough to kill you. This one just hit the heart dead on. they say he probably didn't feel a thing.

I've heard additional details.
He was swimming above the ray when it apparently spooked and slapped the stinger into his chest. He then pulled the several-inches-long stinger out, not realizing it had pierced his heart. He died.
And they got it all on tape.
It truly was a freak accident. Stingray stings are usually not fatal to humans - painful, but not fatal. It was the fact that the stinger actual punctured the heart. And that he pulled it out. If he'd left it in, he probably would have survived.
The tape will never be seen publicly.
This is what I heard, anyway.

I heard he said in an interview a couple years ago "If I die in the field I hope it gets caught on tape" I am sure what to think about seeing the tape or not..........there is a part of me that is a bit curious but on the other hand I feel it is probably best not to see it. Especially because of his children. If it is floating around they could get a hold of it and see it down the road. I have mixed feelings about this. My dad died the first time I was away from him. I always thought God spared me from watching it. The same could be true of Steve Irwin's family the difference is there is a tape of Steve.................The thing is if there was a tape of my Dad as an adult I would kind of want to see what happened, in a way...........but then not sure how I would feel after viewing it. I guess for me I am glad there is no tape.....

Personally, I'm glad the tape will never be shown. I don't want to watch a man die...

Seeing someone die is never easy, watching it over and over again is worse.
I don't want to watch a man die, ever again.

If he did indeed wish for his death to be on tape if it was on the field, perhaps it should be aired. I know I am being the voice of discontent here, but if it is his wish, perhaps there is a method to his madness.
i was never a bug fan of his, but I grew up on National Geographic and Wild Kingdom. I prefer the Kratt Bros approach. That said, he inspired many to be interested in the animal kingdom. He died in a freak incident with a docile animal. Perhaps that is a lesson for us that in even the most docile circumstances, one should still be careful.
We see people dead all the time. How many movies and tv shows have used the Zapruder film...in that we get to see a beloved president shot in the head and killed. Yes it is grainy, but it is still there. When we see the challenger explode on footage, we are seeing the demise of seven people who still have family, friends, and former students who see more than we do each time it airs. Every time Dale Earnhardt's car hits the wall, we see him die. How many thousands do we see die in every documentary that shows footage of 9/11. Not seeing the bodies does not mean you have not seen death.
We as sci fi fans see fake death all the time. Ours is a violent genre, I suppose it is refreshing that the real thing still gives us pause.
