I got this idea after BST posted something simular at Colonial Fleets here is my replie there.
###############################################

Wow, what a question!! , "What kindled your interest?" in BSG.

Well as with many fans here, I first saw BSG as a young boy (others here where older but kids still at heart) it was soon after we saw StarWars in Ireland, Star Trek was on BBC on Saturday mornings after SwapShop with Noel Edmonds and I could watch it.

We as kids loved the visions of Star Trek and the excitment of Star Wars, our young eyes where open wide in exceleration of the movements of both shows and where hungery for more.

Announcement:: Then came on RTE TV (an Irish station) an add for the latest Science fiction spectacular at your local cinema house, In bold letters Battlestar Galactica followed quickly by the first images of the G herself , then in quicker follow ups the cast, Vipers, Cylons, Raiders, Apollo and Starbuck, new and fresh stars, then older well known star Lorne Green whom I have watched in Bananza for what seems forever (we loved Cowboy shows then..I still do) then the Gorgeous ladys of BSG. Athena and Cassi (I had the hots for both of them
even before I knew what the hots where ).

Well I wanted to go. I ran to my mother (as one does when your 8 or 9 ) and begain to beg and pleaded to go to see the BSG.. No !! as was then in Ireland money was tight (not like now). My mother and father could not afford to
go because if I went my Brother and Sister would want to go. dad had the Idea of going and earn the cash myself.

We had a petrol lawnmower and Dad carried it through the house and we got the petrol and off I went and cutting the Lawns of every house I could ..(Profit were given to my Parents as all I wanted was to see the BSG and eat some junk food and McDonels had just opened in Ireland Perfect match) By the way I earned enough so that my Bro and sis could come, they are younger than me.

So I went and watched I loved the story. I loved the effects, I loved the Galactica
design Starbuck was my Fav, he is cool to a 8 year old and to be honest a 35 year old too. looking back the loylty the friendships . the feelings of the show had me buzzing.

well in closing what Kindled my intrest, mostly what you all have said already. but to me it was I earned it. I grew up a little more over those days and understood a little more.

Thanks for listening

I have been a sci fi buff since I was 14. I saw the first BSG when it came out and I was much older.

I got started on Star Trek reruns.  Then the first movie I ever saw in the theater was Star Wars.  Needless to say both were awesome!

So this may be the answer to what kindled my interest.  I was looking for some more good sci fi.

My first memories, (I was 7 in 1978), was that it was as great theme (trying to find your way home).  Had cool characters (all my friends liked Starbuck cuz he was cool.  I always liked Apollo because he was the quiet, sincere, and a great leader.).  But then again, I always liked Richie Cunningham over Fonzie, Mary Ann over Ginger, etc.  It's just my personality I suppose.

I think if most women had a choice, they would want to date Starbuck, but they would want to marry Apollo.

But I digress.

Here's a clear memory.

In one of the episodes, either Starbuck or Apollo looked like they were going to get killed in the episode.  I was all excited, "Will he die"!!!

Then, during the commercial,  my dad came along and said, he won't die, he's a main character.  They don't kill off main characters.

Well, needless to say, I lost part of my childhood that day.  Sad

For some reason, that is what I most remember about watching the series.

Hi Jim
Sci-fi have been my life blood from as far back as I can remember but I think it happened in the later part of the 70s as a boy watching Star trek
but I was 8 then 35 now .

Digress all you wish to Mike  Smiley thats the fun of a forum to have a good chat and be among friends..

Its sad that your father spoiled your reality that day.. I have never let that part of my childhood go even through some of the worst times of my childhood.

Well, I survived anyway.

I make it a point to not correct my daughters now.  I want them to live in the childhood spirit.  They will live in the "real world" for the rest of their lives, so why let them have their misconceptions as long as possible.

My 6 year old daughter thinks I grow a beard by putting peanut butter on my face.

If it doesn't hurt her, why not let her keep her childhood dreams???

Taranis

Although I said Sci fi buff at 14, That was when I started reading them. I remember watching Buck Rogers (the original) Rocket Man and watching a slew of Sci Fi movies in the 50's. I remember one where they showed the Flying Wing before the Air Force scrapped it and then denied it existed.(I had seen it fly over my home town in the 50's also.

It must come natural as my brother who is 15 years older than me was a sci fi buff also and my folks said he would never amount to anything. When I started reading they didn't say anything as he alread had his Bachelors in Nuclear Physics by then and was an Air Force Navigator. (Now he is a retired LC and Doctorate in PN.)

Ok.........
I just remember that I fell in love with everything about Battlestar from the first moment I watched it.  I had seen Star Wars in the movie theater and i have to tell you, I sat there entranced I had never seen anything like it. It fueled my desire for more Sci-fi.  Then when Battlestar came along I was hooked.  I related to well to the story and it was an escape that I much needed at the time Cheesy   I thought the characters were so wonderful.  I had an instant connection with all of them.  It was amazing.  Lorne Green was amazing as Adama.  I lost my father as a child and I always loved watching Adama, I always felt safe and I always felt like it was going to be ok.  I still love watching it today..........I know there are people who get caught up in the hair/cheesiness(so called).  but I don't see any of that.  The special effects were state of the art and I still see that.  I am not a big fan of the overuse of CGI, I think it is the story that matters.  Battlestar has a great story and one that deserves to be finished.

BTW.......yes digress all you want here, that is what we are here for Cheesy   I myself, totally loved the good guys.  Always have.  I feel in love with Luke Skywalker the first time I saw him with the setting suns on Tatooine.  I always thought that is what I want........a hero and a good guy.( I saw Hamil on TV in a clip for epi III-I still think I love him..............LOL      )

I think they like the danger and excitment of men like Han and Starbuck..and sometimes it takes men like Apollo who are stable and kind (while still as strong and as tough as Han & Starbuck) who sometime help the poor girl recover after thier experances of the Han's and Starbuck..

as to leia , while I also think Portman is beautifu and quiet stunning to look at
but Leia (Carrie Fisher) has a look that appiles to me very much (including the Leia's Metal Bikini mmmmmmmmmm Cheesy) but even before she wore that nice little outfit I was attracted to her I still am really.

but I think my attraction was on her character and the Strength she has. She was not a screamer needing a man to protect her every five minutes but a woman who can stand on her own to feet and stand up for her ideals  and as a 7 or 8 year old I like it. But she still needed the help of Han and Luke to win the day.. and I think for the most part that goes for most of the women in Sci-fi they are usally tougher and still ladys. Ok Ok some times they have to scream but if some one was going to try and eat me I would scream my head off too.

Cheesy

Great picture taranis............

I don't think there is a man alive who doesn't like the metal Bikini  I do think leia's personality is better, even Lucas picked her between the two(Padme or leia).  I love strong female characters too like leia but if you watch attack of the clones(epi II) Padme is very strong.......when she takes off to save Obi-Wan.  And she says she is not afraid to die right before they are to be executed.  Even in Epi I she fights for her people and comes up with a great plan to take back her planet!  i do think leia's personality is "funner" but she led a different life.  Either way both are amazing!
