Man shot outside Fairview P.O.

FAIRVIEW – A man was wounded in a domestic shooting behind the Fairview Post Office Monday morning, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.

The victim, Lawson Hebb, of Fairview, a custodian who worked at the U.S. Postal Service branch at 1352 Charlotte Highway, was taken to Mission Hospitals for treatment after being shot in the shoulder, Detective Sgt. Preston Honeycutt said. A spokeswoman for Mission said he was in critical condition.

Hebb's wife Irene has been detained as a suspect in the shooting, but she has not yet been charged with a crime, Honeycutt said.

The shooting took place behind the post office in a loading area, Honeycutt said.

Witnesses saw the shooting take place, but Honeycutt did not give details about the incident or how Irene Hebb was detained.

The Sheriff's Office had previously investigated a domestic dispute involving the couple, he said. Honeycutt said he didn't know whether either had a restraining order out against the other.

The Sheriff's Office was called to the parking lot of the post office on U.S. 74 at 10:30 a.m.

Hebb is a contractor with the postal service who has been working at the Fairview office for three years, according to postal service spokeswoman Deborah Yackley.

The post office remained open after the shooting because staff did not think there was any further danger to workers or customers, she said.

The office's postmaster Paul Moreno said he had no comment on the incident this afternoon.
